IPL Second (2nd) Semi-Final – Kings XI Punjab vs Chennai Super Kings
Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, May 31, 2008 Match starts at 14:30 GMT
Preview:
The Kings XI Punjab carry the momentum into this second semifinal, with opener Shaun Marsh decimating the Rajasthan Royals in their previous match. Captain Yuvraj Singh also returned to form with a 16-ball 49, and the left-handers contribution will be vital for his teams’ cause.
Chennai on the other hand sneaked through to the semis, edging out the Mumbai Indians. But all this could count for nothing, as there are no second chances in this stage of the tournament, the better team on the day going through to the finals.
Mini- Battles: Can Gony tie down the rampant Marsh, or will the Aussie tear into the Chennai attack without a care? Dhoni will have a tough ask when he comes out to bat against the wile of Piyush Chawla.
Star Watch: With Shaun Marsh being in the kind of form that he is in now, his wicket will be crucial for the Super Kings. Watch out for Muthaiah Muralitharan, who is yet to show his full prowess with the ball for Chennai. What an ideal opportunity for the Sri Lankan to come up with a vintage performance!
Team News: Stephen Fleming has flown back home for the birth of his child which means Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan might be asked to open with Parthiv. Kapugedara might also get a look in.
Punjab might have won the last game convincingly but they might prefer the experienced Jayawardene over Pomersbach in the middle order for this crucial tie.
Previous Encounters: The Chennai Super Kings defeated the Kings XI Punjab in both their previous clashes, winning by 33 runs and 18 runs respectively. This should give them some confidence going into the match, though the slate will be wiped clean with a win for Punjab.
Match will start at 14:30 GMT (8pm IST)
